Black Wave!

10/15/2007

At Interbike we had on display the lightest Sunday frame that we have ever done. I dubbed it the Black Magic on one of the web videos, but I just called it the Black Wave above. It weighed in at just over 4.5 lbs or 4lbs 8ozs. Basically this frame is the same as new frame with a few differences.

First, there’s NO paint on this frame. The black coating is the rustproof coating that has been on every frame we have offered. From the first frame in 2005 to the Wave last year, the rustproofing has been there. It is the black stuff that’s inside the frame tubes and under the paint that makes your frame really difficult to strip. Paint has some weight to it, the frame with paint weights a little over a quarter pound more than the BLACK WAVE/BLACK MAGIC.

The second major feature of this frame is the shaved headtube. The headtube has NOT changed in length or height at all, so your geometry is not different at all. The difference is the upper part of the ‘cup’ has been removed as shown in the left and center photos above. The 45 degree angles on the headtube are still there, but the upper part has been removed. The headtube shaving ends up revealing the bearings as seen in the photo on the right. This isn’t drastic weight savings just helping to eliminate excess material on the frame.

There you go, the inside info on the ‘Black Magic/Wave’ frame. It will be offer in 20.5, 20.75, 21 and 21.25 along with brake and brakeless options. Ian Schwartz’s frame will also come in Black Magic/Wave style. Look for them in February or March, I can’t give you and exact date. Next up Ian Schwartz’s frame. Leave any questions in the comments and I’ll get to them!

    pretty fuckin dope.

wish the rust proofing had an option other than that black.

  • jeremy barger

will the ian frame come in 20 w/no mounts

  • Dr Wang

    Hey!

What is the price difference between the regulare wave and black wave, if any?

Also will the regulare wave come in 20.75 this year?

    Very good work jim!!!

  • Anonymous

I remember trying to get you to sell me the wave in just rustproff.

Will the Black Wave come in just rustproof?

  • Anonymous

I can get it in 21.25 w/tabs right?

    Is there a price difference?

  • Anonymous

^^ the black wave is just rustproof

  • Badjo

Hi Jim, to be honsest when you’re first products were released i thouht it were just about the hype. There was handlebars and forks. That was about it. As time has past I now se how much you know about the industry, what we riders want and being innovative. How you handpicked a solid team that does the best possible representation. People have probably already given you alot of props for your sundaybikes but you deserve to here it over and over if you ask me. I hope 2008 will bring your company only the best since I know it will to me. Stay sharp // B

    IAN – 20 – PLEASE…

  • Drew

I like the rust proof color but I don’t like the headset showing. Either way awesome work and I still can’t wait to see good pic of the Ian sig frame.

  • emerson alex

i have the sunday wave in toothpast and i love it so far…these look even better than my sunday. i LOVE the gusset/headtube, so street.

  • Anonymous

If I didnt ride a T1, id buy this.

  • Anonymous

1)Whats the weight of the ian black magic?
2)Is the ian lighter than a regular sunday with stump post and seat clamp?
#What height does the seatpost on the ian compare to? (slammed stump, etc)

This shit’s dope! Cant wait for it to drop.

  • Anonymous

In the other post with pictures of the blue and grey the headset wasnt showing.
Will there be bars and forks in the rustproof black?

  • Rune

How is the strenght on the headtube? If the headset is alittle loose, wont it just do more damage than normal?

  • Anonymous

You guys doing any 75* head tubes?

  • emerson alex

please do vinnie bars in rust proof black…or any black that isnt as sparkly as the frame!!!

    i want those bars bad

  • Anonymous

The frames need to be less beefy, take the fat ass d,t gusset out n slim out the dropouts n wishbone. = much nicer looking.

  • Anonymous

SUNDAY TRIUMPHS ARE THE BEST !!!!!!!!!!

  • Anonymous

The downtube gusset makes it look like a flat frame, which is pretty disgusting.

  • andy

what kind of testing have you done on the new headtube? seems a bit sketchy.

  • Anonymous

I cant agree with you more Andy ! good point.

  • Anonymous

i don’t understand why you would want to expose the bearings in the headtube.

  • Micheal

ok, will the non black magic/wave frames have the normal headtubes? that don’t expose the bearings. because i’m not into that.
and please make a frame with 75 degree headtube. if not for that one thing i would love this frame so much.

ALL of the new frames at Interbike looked like the one that Jim posted of his personal bike here:

    http://www.sundaybikes.com/uploaded_images/P1020814-730469.jpg

The gusset is in a smooth line with the downtube, and the dropouts and wishbone look to be about as minimal as it gets.

Guys, guys c’mon! Remember when the integrated headsets started to show up. Nobody trusted them and said they were ugly as hell. Well now its a standard and proven to be better then its precursor. I’am sure we’ll be facing the same thing with the director forks and the same things with these shaved headtubes. You waint and see. // B

  • Sunday!

Ask and you shall receive, right! This might be the most comments on our site yet. Okay here goes.

-The rustproofing only comes in black, I asked too.
-Not sure on the 20inch Ian frame, 20 inch sales are barely existed, but I have had people pushing it as late, so it might happen.
-The price difference isn’t known yet, not sure exactly. 20.75 will be offered on all frames this year.
-Again not sure of the price difference and 21.25inch in gyro tabs. Not sure yet, I’ll keep it in mind.
-Ian’s frame check out will come up next.
-The seat height on an Ian frame is about 1 inch, his frame is exactly the same as a Second Wave, but with a pivotal mount. I think it saves about 1 oz, compared to a post and seat clamp.
-There will be matching bars and forks in the rustproof.
-To be honest the headtube is something we are testing, we ended up showing it at the show because it is really interesting. It won’t be available until we have thoroughly tested the headtube.
-75 degree headtubes are a possibility along with some other ideas we are going to test during 2008.
=Vinnie bars will probably come in rustproof, but the first runs will come in regular black when they are released by Thanksgiving.
-Well the frame is drasticlly different than the previous frames. The dropouts are way smaller, the wishbone lost atleast a 1/4inch of diameter, the downtube also became smaller with a little smaller gusset.
-As for the gusset, it is one of the main reasons why this is a street frame. Which looks better a cracked frame or a gusset?
-You guys are correct, testing needs to be done! And it is, Vinnie will be riding the frame along with Ben Ward running one. The only issue is if it does come loose. Since nobody rides with a loose headset then this shouldnt’ be a problem.

    Feel free to ask more.

Hopefully the new Black Majic frame will come with out those shaved headtubes…cuz that frame looks great

  • Anonymous

idont think that headset is going to work out my friends and i have brooken about 3 headsets just from it creakings and now that the frame isnt going to hold it together its going to suckkkk

  • Rune

How much wheigt does the new headtube save? Theres no protection against the bearings getting a direct hit. I trust that you will put it proberly to the test, and I will probably buy this frame too

  • Anonymous

Not liking that headtube with the headset showing. Not going to steer me away(no pun intended) from the 08′s though. Stoked .

  • Anonymous

So the new frames should deffinitally be out by march?

  • Anonymous

will it be harder to paint by ourselves since its just rust proof and i just wanted to say that this is definatly my next frame

  • Anonymous

when will removable gyro tabs be availible? if ever?

  • Anonymous

god thats ugly, why not just lift weights and make up the difference for a normal weighing bike. just an opinion though.

  • James

Wow, these look rediculously good. From the colors, to the weight and cleanliness of everything. Sadly I’m almost positive that my first Sunday is going to be my last seeing as the one test frame went through the entire team had it’s ass kicked and was still in perfect condition. I have a feeling i’ll be on it for several years.

  • Anonymous

75 degree headtube angle anytime soon??

  • Anonymous

Definately going to buy a ian one when it comes out in black magic. Only if this headset is changed back to normal, I just dont like bearings being exposed.

  • Anonymous

i just bought the wave frame yesterday and its fantastic, massive thanx to the guys at farnborough cycles who got the frame and built the bike while i was in afghanistan, THANX GUYS

  • Anonymous

will the ian schwartz model have some special specs, like a shorter rear end or so?

    we want Ian’s bike check!!!!
(why not a bikecheck for every team member?)

  • Sunday!

This feels like we are on bikeguide or bmxboard. Am I allowed to say those two names in the same sentence? Don’t want to cause any trouble.

Okay so here are some more answers to questions posted.

-We are in the testing stages of the shaved headtube that is why the other frames didn’t have it. We will only put it out if we feel it works.
-The frame will hold it together! Its the 45 angle that it rests on, not so much the out part. If your headset is tight than there should be no problem. There are some bad headsets out there.
-The shaving only saves so much and everyone is worried about a direct hit on the bearing. If you dent your headtube there, your frame is fucked. So wouldn’t you rather give up a bearing instead of a headtube?
-Trying as hard as we can to have them out by March.
-It shouldn’t be harder because every other frame we have done has the rustproof under it, but your weight will change if you do it.
-Ian’s frame has a short rear end already. Any shorter and you can rest your foot directly on the pedal and peg at the same time!

Again we are in the testing stages. I will post a picture later of what my headtube with the overlaping headtube looks like. I really think the new style we are testing is a lot cleaner and smoother. The original style looks bulky.

can we get all the geometry on the ian frame?

  • Anonymous

i thought i heard the 08 frames might be out at the e begining of the year?
    just wondering.
frames kick ass. I have an OG Sunday!. Still tough as nails. I haven’t bent anything or broke anything. Rad job.

  • Sunday!

I was hoping that Ian’s frame would be available by Christmas or the beginning of the year. We just want to make sure that everything is correct with the frame before we release it, so let’s just say January, okay.

  • Anonymous

Nice stuff. good to see you take your time and make it rite.
-So the Ian has a shorter rear end? Whats the length on that?
-I too would love to see a 75 HA, I think it would be good on the ian frame matched up with a shorter rear end, kinda techy style. Keep up the good work.

  • Sunday!

Okay, let me be more clear. Ian’s frame already has a short rear end and so does the current frame. Both have the same length rear end which is 13.75 inch at the center of the axle to center of bb. It won’t be any shorter than the previous models because your foot ends up hitting the peg way too easy already.
As for 75HA, it may be tech for going forward, but as you know Ian rolls backwards a lot. 75 will make it too twitchy for him. He has never requested a shorter rear end or a 75HA.
    thanks,
    jim

  • dylan sparkman

yeah that frame would look great! in a furnace! great job guys! i love how the internal headset being half cut away makes the frame look even more horrible AWSOME!

  • Fabian

    maybe i missed this but

what size was the black magic at interbike?

im just trying to get a feel for how much a 21.25 will weigh

    any guesses? with/without paint?

    thanks

  • Anonymous

not feeling the shaved headtube crap, at all. theres no point, looks like crap too

  • Sunday!

The one at Interbike was a 21 which felt pretty light there, so the 21.25 won’t be much more.

  • Gmoney

when are the morning 2.1 forks comming out????
