First Sunday Friends Model C Bike Check!

4/27/2009

Here is the first Sunday Friends Model C bike check!  This is Tom L‘s from Chicago who built up this silver Model C frame with silver Plus 4 Morning 24.1 forks and Black Magic 24umphs!  That’s right!  Black Magic bars are now available.  Thought we’d throw that surprise in there for you.  Look for Black Magic forks later on.  This is the second one without brakes besides the one Jim Bauer rides.  Looks so good!  If anyone else gets one built up please send photos to me!  There’s another surprise coming later this week!

looks gr8 – really hope you do a 22″ tt option…..other wise, it looks like i’m sticking to 20′s

  • http://sundaybikes.com jimc

Hopefully these things will take off and be more popular so we can add different options, styles and sizes. You ride a Deuce Deuce right?

You probably have seen this, but he rides a 24″. I understand his is a “trials” bike, but its geo is similar. Its BB is 3/8 lower, CS ~1/8 longer, HA 73, and the wheel base is 40.945″. Not Sure how the wheelbase compares to the sunday, but being that there is less that 1/8 in CS lengths I imagine to have such a long wheel base the top tube must be fairly long. Anywho I dont want a trials bike, I want a Sunday, but I need at least a 22″ top tube.

  • nick

The point I was trying to make is that I don’t feel a longer top tube would limit riding in any way. …Plus that Vid is pretty sweet.

  • toby

yeah i ride a deuce deuce and i’m afraid that subsquently i don’t reckon i’ll ever ride a shorter tt again – going longer dramatically improved my riding and meant i could ride harder for longer. I’m really keen on riding bigger wheels (cos i feel that bigger wheels-like the longer tt- would suit my 6ft6inch frame much better) but it seems kinda pointless if i’m gonna have less room than with 20″ wheels.
I also hope these take off – i really wish i could rock a sunday – sunday started at the same time i started riding, and i’ve always aspired to own a sunday – u guys blatantly make the best looking, most advanced and downright coolest frames – just wish i weren’t such a bloody giant.
Maybe u could do a “TIdal Wave” frame to compete with the Macneil Deuce Deuce…..and some “Tidalumph” 9″ rise bars – a whole range for super tall dudes! Ah well a man can dream…..!

I’ll send you pics of mine sometime next week Jim. Waiting on cranks and trying to find some damn tires!

Btw, I’m planning on running a 27/10 and have concluded that gear inch equations need to be re-worked for bmx bikes. My 25/9 felt like a granny gear, any input you could share would be appreciated.

Thanks for making the bikes, taking the chance, and providing shop employees with one more toy to spend our rent money on. :))

  • TOM L

    Hey Pablo
I run a 25 10 on my C-model ,It works out great for me

p-to the-lo! we will have tires in really soon. and to everybody who says they need a 22″ top tube…you really just have to ride this bike to understand why the geometry was set up the way it was. if you are a bmxer wanting to ride bigger wheels you will probably notice right away the similar feeling you get riding the model c compared to your respective 20″. i feel that if the top tube was longer on my model c, it would just feel way too long. there is already plenty of room in the “cock pit.” to add more would feel very wierd for sure i think.

i ride the 21.75″ top tube model c and am over 6′ tall. it feels better than a squeeze on some boobies. well…..almost.

A simple way to figure out gearing is Front sprocket size (number of teeth) divided by rear size then multiply the answer by your wheel size. If your answer is about 55 then that gearing should work. Numbers higher that 55 and it will be harder to pedal, and lower = easier.

Example: the old school 44-16 gearing. 44/16=2.75, 2.75×20=55
Example: 25-9 gearing. 25/9=2.77, 2.77×20=55.4 (so this is just slightly harder than 44-16)
Example: 25-9 gearing on a 24″. 25/9=2.77, 2.77×24=66.48 (this is HARDER to pedal, Granny gears make it easier to pedal, I think you may be a bit confused as to what a granny gear is)

Tom L’s 25-10 comes out to 60, which would work but won’t match the feeling of a 20 w/ 25-9

    Here are some options:
    22-9 = 58.66, 22-10 = 52.8, 23-10 = 55.2 (good match), 24-10 = 57.6, 24-11 = 52.36, 25-11 = 54.54
    26-11 = 56.72, 26-12 = 52, 27-11 = 58.9, 27-12 = 54, 28-12 = 56 (good match), 29-12 = 58, 29-13 = 53.53
    30-13 = 55.38 (good match).

    Hope that helps.

I can do anything on a 22″ TT that I can on a 21″, But I can do it more comfortably.

i ride a 30/9 on my bmx bike. but i like the fact that it is very hard to pedal. on my cruiser i originally set up a 30/10. i was using a kmc 410h chain, but the axle was either all the way slammed (too much) or had a 1/4 of it hanging out of the drops without running a half link. i then went to 28/10 and everything sits perfectly in the drops. also, the 28/10 is a tad harder to pedal, but as i mentioned before i like a little bit harder of a gear ratio.

also if you need a good gear ratio chart…check out sheldon brown’s website. he is crazy and knew (rip big guy)

http://www.sheldonbrown.com/gears/ for single speed set ups like a bmx bike, just use the size of your front gear in one of the 3 top boxes…then your rear cog size in one of the lowers. this is also a good way to measure out your gear ratio because you can input your crank arm lengths. hope this helps!

Toby-Hey where do you live? Aren’t you in BC or somewhere over there?

  • http://sundaybikes.com jimc

This is amazing some really useful comments on a website. Nick hey thanks for the tip, I used the sheldon brown calculator and after multiple attempts I started to understand the numbers. I think 55 is a little easy nowadays especially with most pros running gear ratios around 60. I think you’ll start to see changes in rear end lengths based around the 60 number. Aaron’s frame is a perfect example of that, his is based around a 30-10 not the 25-9 that has been common. With the Model D rear end at 14, you would run a 30-10 to have it slammed and not use a half link. This is great and useful talk, I appreciate it everyone!

  • TOM L

I like mine to pedal a little hard also.
My Tires are 24.75 inches in diameter. So with my gearing it’s 61.875
Which is perfect for the longer parks. On my Cruiser bike for the Bmx track,I run a 54

Jim- Hey! Nah i’m over the pond in England – why’d u ask?
    Hey Bobby – u say ur over 6ft and comfy on a 21.75 – i’m 6ft6 – which is faarckin huge – seriously.
I need at least 22″! & like Nick says less than an inch is not gonna effect agility much – just comfort.
I know that obviously i’m in a pretty small minority of bmxers over 6’4 and therefore it’s a small market, but as i’ve said before Macneil have been selling and updating their deuce deuce frame since b4 sunday was even a company so there MUST be enough people buying 22s

  • tread

What size tires are you running?

  • tread

Oh never mind I just need to read more.

    UPDATE on my C-Model
If I could only use one word to tell you about this bike it would be KILLER !!!
I have been riding it Down town Chicago for the last couple of days on the lake front.
I love it ,It is great ,I did have to put the brakes on it though ,After allmost plowing down a group of Pedestrians after a huge stair drop and 180.
But all and all Jim did a great job when he came up with the Model-C
