Eben Krackau’s Model C!

6/3/2009

Check out Eben Krackau‘s new green Model C with green Plus 4 bars and forks.  It’s weird having to explain who guys are, but for those that don’t know Eben was a G Banks local out of San Antonio.  He rode for Homeless Bikes and Standard throughout the early to mid 90s and had parts in Dave Parrick‘s Homeless videos.  He said one of the best things about the Model C, “I think this frame would make it a lot easier for most of us to be able to keep riding into our 40′s.”  The Model C is intended to be a fun bike for all, but if it keeps guys riding as they get older then awesome!

What up with the Girl skateboard sticker in the front?

whats the point with LHD and pegs on the left? kinda dumb if you ask me

  • http://sundaybikes.com jimc

Hmm, maybe he’s into Girl Skateboards. Spike Jonze is part owner. The LHD pegs on the left makes sense to me. I run pegs on right with sprocket on right. If I switched it around then I would loose crooked grinds and plus it would look weird for me.

I can vouch. Being and older rider, my C feels at the same time exactly like what I’ve been riding for so long, and just a bit different to accommodate my old bones and gut. If that makes any sense. I love this bike. Good on Eben. It’s cool to see him riding. Stylecats is one of the vids that really got me into BMX.

  • dan

would it run the same gearing as a 20 like 25/9 or what freewheel would i run wit a 25t chainwheel….

  • Ryan B.

I like it, nice shadow stuff! Brakepads? clearly theres a better way too stop :)

    dan – 25/11 25/12?

  • Kabuki

I’m running a 30/10 It’s a little stiffer but faster. Not a problem at all. Mt track bike is way harder to push.

  • http://jaketheripperyoutube nonstopaction

will it run a suspension fork it provide a large margin of error

  • Pablo

I’m pretty sure the geometry isn’t designed to accommodate the travel in a suspension fork. Doesn’t stop you from putting one on there of course, it’s just going to handle more like a chopper than was intended.

  • Ryan B.

    Tis no Mtn bike lol…

  • http://www.pdxbmx.com benward

The harder gear ratios seem to feel better on these because they just roll faster than your typical BMX bike.

For a standard feeling gearing you could run: 25-10

For a harder cranking gearing you could run: 25-9, 27-10, 28-10

With a half link and the 25-9, or 28-10 you can fully slam the back end at the 15″ mark.

With a half link and the 24-9, or 27-10 you can run the back end at the 15.125″ mark.

NO half link and the 25-10 you can run the back end at the 15.125″ mark.

NO half link and the 26-10 you can run the back end at the 15″ mark.

  • Ryan B.

Benward – You call 25/10 standard for a cruiser? thats like 60 gear inches. Standard or desired ratio is anywhere from 53-57 usually. Maybe 58 if your on a lengthy track! With that said…

    25/11 = 54.54
    25/12 = 50

now I suppose if dan wanted some fast top end speed 25/10 could be done but your going to have fun getting up to speed! and spinning. Depends what dan is after. with his cruiser (how its used). 50 will be the easier take off but less top end (good in trails for getting up to speed quickly). and then the 54.54 will be your happy medium.which is more on a standard level. If you run a cassette buy a 11T and 10T cog!! and try em both! Crank arm length can also play a little role in how your gear ratio feels. Hope you can absorb (study, learn) this info! so im not just confusing you.

  • dan

    thanks guys…

Ryan, hey I really think the whole standard gearing thing for a cruiser has to be challenged. All the complete cruisers come with this 30-14 gearing or some equivalent, but those are so weak. I’m a grown man and I can deal with the gear being harder. To be honest, even on a 20″ our gearing thinking needs to be challenged. I run a 27-9 on my 20″ and a 27-10 on the 24″ The cruiser is pretty good for me, but I bet I could go one tooth higher on the 20″ To run the same gearing that’s offered on completes for 15 year old kids doesn’t seem right. Just some words to think about.

  • TOM L

I agree with Jim on this one
When I first built up my C ,I ran 25/10 and just changed it to 25/9 so it can roll faster.
The 25/10 spun out to fast for me and I run the 2.25 aitkins front and rear.
I am in great shape and have no problem bringing it up to speed fast.

  • goride09

I’m with Jim,I can deal with a harder gear.I’m 39yo been ridin bmx forever and a harder gear means less pedaling once you get going. When I eventually get my model-c I’ll run a 30-13 or 28-13,I run a 30-13 on my sledgehammer and thats hard.so the same gear on a 24″wheel should be a little easier.I cant wait to get my model-c.Thank you Sunday bikes for making a big bike feel like a liitle one.

  • Ryan B.

See thats the thing.. you guys can possibly get away with a little tougher gearing since you have been riding for so long and have the legs for it. but the average rider doesnt find it as desireable and would like the first two or three crank revolutions to be easier. Thats where dan has to decide what feels right for him. His size or his leg strenth too.

Jimc – Your just slightly over the 57-58 ratio mark.. which with your trained legs you can prob get away with it. I bet if you rode in close quarters (you got only so many feet to get up to speed before your jump) you would want a little more speed in the start and would want something a little less than what you have on your cruiser? I agree someowhat with you that the stock gearing on most complete cruisers is a little low meaning faster on the start or weak but that also depends on what complete cruiser your looking at because some cruisers have something a little more than a 30/14 out of the factory. You are in the 57 range on your 20″ and thats still a little hard to most but its closer to average gearing than what your doing on your cruiser!

Lastly you must really like to haul ass, do you really need that much top end to run your hard ratios?? Who you running from? lol

  • bobbyp

i ride a 30/10 on my model c and it feels like buttah. i wouldnt say i have “trained legs” because, well, i dont really know what that even means to be honest. but i like to have a bike that pedals hard and fast. i also ride a 30/9 on my 20″ to put things into perspective a bit. but before that i always rode a 28/9.

and ryan, i love to haul ass and i’im not running from anybody….they are just trying to keep up with the model c…

  • Kabuki

    What Bobbyp said

  • TOM L

    That’s Right

  • Ryan B.

Ok bobbyp you gotta be joking 30/10? Thats getting like a track bike or fixie gearing..which use even larger wheels. I catch a drift here a cruiser seems to roll easier or better than a normal 20″ so like Jimc said the cruiser gearing may need to be challanged a little bit and you may be able to get by using harder gearing. But at what tradeoff or cost? you gotta also think about wheres the happy medium?

Look up the definition of “trained” that should help you out for the meaning. Maybe the art of “spinning” is not so important now days. I dont mean spinning your tire either lol Might want to look that one up too if its an unfamiliar term. Run what you wish im not going to judge an of you for it lol Im just trying to imform you about gearing and its a possibility the gearing you have chosen may not be the sweet spot.

  • Ryan B.

I didnt mean to sound abrupt towards you bobbyp but.. but trained meaning

to form by instruction, discipline, or drill b. b to teach so as to make fit, qualified, or proficient

to make prepared (as by exercise) for a test of skill

If you have rode bmx or bikes in general for many years, im sure your legs aren’t un trained. Thats part of the reason you guys like the harder higher gearing!. Man with that kinda gearing you guys can prob hit 35-45 mph on your model C’s and thats haulin for the style of bike it is. Oh and as far as spinning goes ask a Pro BMX Racer or even a road racer or track rider, they tens to use spinning more often. Although the skill can still be used on a 20″ or 24″ bike by anyone that desires a lil more speed little less gearing so that you can get a better start. Yet keep up with someone thats geared a little higher than you. Gotta have endurance though Spinning isnt easy!

  • bobbyp

dear ryan. when you say “that style of bike” do you mean a bike with 24″ wheels? i guess what i am trying to say is that this bike more often times than not gets put into the same classification as a bmx racing cruiser with 24″ wheels, or a few guys want to try to put it into the “bigMX” category, but i feel that this bike really is in a class of its own. so to be honest, i think you just have to ride one of these bikes for yourself to really get the feel of how it rides, and more importantly how a person might go about setting it up. im not saying you dont know what you are talking about or anything, just that its kind of hard to take advice on how to set this bike up from anybody who hasnt ridden one yet.

although i do plan on trying to hit a race track or two up (strictly for fun), i built this bike up to ride it on whatever i want. it has already been to the trails riding in the new line the guys just built, at the skatepark ripping corners in the bowl (this thing is sooo fast!), at rays MTB riding everything from the red bull box line to the skinnys. it seems to my that my gearing is “pretty sweet.” its fast and once i am going fast, i can pedal and go faster. just what i wanted, SWEET!

ps, i ride a fixed gear bike with a 44/16 gear ratio. i am fully aware of the art of spinning. i am also fully aware of the art of ramping up the jawn. and you dont really need to worry about your gear ratio for that!

no offense taken to any of your comments, so please dont take any from mine. but once more, until you ride this bike you really dont know what you are talking about on what gear you should run and how you should set it up.

  • Ryan B.

Yeah, that style of bike meaning Cruisers in general or bmx bikes that arent usually known for being a bike that isnt designed to do land speed records or be geared quite high lol… I agree with you on not giving advice on this bike i havent ridden (doubt anyone has one in Fort Wayne IN.) but im going by gearing specs for 24″ wheels. The same gearing info or process to find ratios that has been used and been known to be correct for years and years. While the Model C may be in a class by itself the gearing (gear ratio) in terms would be the same as any cruiser with 24″ wheels. Guess the “sweet spot” of gearing has evolved or gearing has became a personal preference.

You say your going to try your model C at a track huh? better take a 11T driver along just incase your a little slow out of the gate ;)

  • andy

Ryan B – maybe if you spent less time on the internet, you wouldn’t have such week legs and you could keep up with the rest of us haha!

  • eddy813

I started riding mt bikes a few years ago and I’m having trouble adapting to my 20″ again, but this cruiser would solve that problem cuz its bigger. I want one of these asap. Oh and what does ramping up the jawn mean? I’m from Florida fellas.

  • Ryan B.

andy – you dont know me for one… you cant tell if im on the internet too much or not. Also you have no clue on my physical attributes. Legs strong or weak (week? learn how to spell) gearing can make a difference. Kids these days, always quick to try and talk trash.Awww what is it andy? is the gearing concept a luttle too much for your brain to ponder?

  • andy

your legs are weak and luttle!!

  • EVILPLANKTON

HAHAHA I will rule the Bmx world with my new contraption

  • davide5

Damn…did I just log on to a fixie website? Never heard so much shit talking about gearing. Run what ya brung.

  • lowlife_slim

lets leave the pretentious gear opinions to the hipsters on the fixed gear sites.

this is a slick bike. i’ve been riding a DK 24 for a couple years now, and the one thing i dont really like is the handlebar height in proportion to the rest of the bike. i feel like i’m hunching over, and it kills my lower back. i may just run these bars until i can piece together a complete.

  • ben

I ride a 44 and a 13 that’s three teeth under standard grearing and it works fine if you have 25 you should have a 9 30/10 33/11 36/12 39/13 42/15 44/16 that’s standard gearing to clear it up if any of thoose isn’t right for you then your too picky
