Anthony Wilson Bike Check

Anthony Wilson has been on flow from me for about a year and half now. He’s basically only been riding that long! He’s easily one of the funniest people to ride with. There’s no care for trends or anything like that just a desire to ride all the time. I decided to show his bike check because he has been riding the ‘Shaved’ headtube frame every since I switched to a longer frame. He tears it up, so why not let him continue testing it. Well, this frame is almost a 1.5 years old and there’s no signs of the shaved headtube damaging bearings or anything like that. There’s only some rust because Anthony rides in the snow.

Yeah what is the point in that headtube, it just looks like someone has done a bit of a shit job with that.

kyleThe real main idea behind the shaved headtube is that you are minimizing the bike. I guess its almost like people not running brake mounts when you don’t run brakes. It really shouldn’t matter if the mounts are there or not, but people always want them off. The extra metal does nothing for the headset and when you run a fork with a built in race the extra metal hangs down and looks gross. It really looks smoother going from the headtube down to the fork. The old headset style looks bulky compared to this. People have said the metal protects the headset, but if you can dent a frame there, you not only ruin a headset, but also a frame. You’ll break a headset from normal riding before you break one it getting damaged.
jimcI think it looks worse, but to each his own. I mean, the bearings themselves aren’t supposed to be exposed directly to the elements, hence the rust. Getting rid of unnecessary material just because you can is how the Grim Reaper happened.
Russ BengtsonThat’s a big step to go from a shaved headtube to a grim reaper. You are right about the bearing being exposed to the elements, but skatepark dust never really causes rust. Anthony rides his bike in pretty much any condition except a foot of snow and I know he’s thought about it. You could say the same logic for having built in races on forks. It exposes the bearing to the elements too.
jimcpeople build bikes with looks in mind. some people are into the look of a grim reaper and some people are into the look of a sunday wave 2. in the exact same way, some people are into rice burners and some into muscle cars. i think the shaved headtube looks pretty cool, but thats just me. if it doesnt effect structural integrity of the frame, there really shouldnt be any arguing points here, just the argument of if you like the way it looks or if you dont. so does that mean i like rice burners or muscle cars more?

EvanIm not a fan of the look. I liked the idea at first but now seeing the exposed bearings, rusting, and looking gross, no thanks. I have to disagree with you too Evan, I think although it looks like a narrower head tube the exposed bearings interrupt the flow of the look. Thumbs down for me. Id pass on this feature.

Sunday has a flawless rep in BMX right now. You don’t see too many people shit-talking Sunday. You might if you whittle bits off the frame like this.
Just my opinion, though.
JoeYou know what the problem with it is, looks-wise? You’re sacrificing a good looking top-of-the-HT for a smoother looking bottom-of-the-HT. What you end up with is a kinda cool looking bottom and a really janky looking top. it might flow more smoothly into the fork, but the top of the HT looks ridiculous.
RedRed-To be honest Anthony is running a traditional top part of the headset. We made specific headset compression pieces just for the shaved headtube that are smaller than the traditional ones. He never ended up with one and was forced to use the old style. I thought there would be some confusion and it was my mistake for not mentioning that.

Thanks for the explanation. So basically what you’re saying is, if Sunday decides to do this in the future on production frames, there will also be modified headsets available, too?
RedYeah, there will be headsets available that fit this. Most likely it will be a compression piece that will come with a frame, so you won’t have to buy a new headset just to make it look refined. I’m really into the look of it.

RedHey jim, you have been testing this shaved headtube for a long time now, i remember seeing this in older posts, about 2 years i guess, i think vinnie sammon tested it on his signiture frame. Anyway i think it looks ok.
