Jim Cielencki Bike Check
Here is the Fluorange Funday I just built up to try out some new dimensions. I’ve been riding the my 24″ Model C for 2 months now and it was time to change it up and ride a 20 for a little while. I put together the Funday because of its 13.5 rear end length and the 11.5 inch bottom bracket height. The idea is that the lower bb will keep the bike stable and not too loopy while still allowing it to tailwhip and spin better. I grew up riding long rear end frames so having something this short is foreign to me. Hopefully the lower bb will counter act the short rear end. If not then its back to the Second Wave. I’ll update you over the next few weeks. Here’s my parts list below.
Frame Fluorange Funday 20.75″ with brake mounts
Fork Black Morning 2.1 forks with built in race
Bars Black Magic Sunday Forumphs with 4 degrees upsweep
Stem Odyssey Elementary Black
Front Hub GSport Marmoset

Front Tire Odyssey Aitken 2.1

ah it must be nice to be amazing. New parts that nobody else has (or can afford). JCPC pedals, a Sunday seat clamp?? and of course the new 9t ratchet… I’m jealous.
The Muffin ManSPC details pls. Hope it’s a three-bolt! Doesn’t look like it, though. Sigh.
Russ BengtsonJim,
This is why I think Sunday should have another frame with, let’s say, 11.65 BB height and 13.65 rear-end length. With the current line, riders who prefer this “in-between” geometry can’t take advantage of Sunday’s incredible quality…
RobAh Russ you ruined my hopes that it was a Sunday X Sprfls collabo…. your site should do more X collabo’s
Lelandjim please describe the feeling of a second wave to a funday, nd tell us which you prefer
AJAJ. Well I’m not exactly too sure the feeling yet because I haven’t ridden as much as I would like to have. It feels really good. I still loop out, but it really feels good for 360s and doing hopovers out of grinds. More next week.
jimcjim
Haha! It’s a really weird 3 bolt design! Its triple the weight of every seat clamp out there. Just kidding!
jimcbring back triple bolt clamps jim…do it!
allanjim, doesnt the 4 degrees upsweep on the bars make it more difficult to do spins? or do you just get used to the upsweep after a while?
alexhow come you just dont build a spc into the frame it seems like thats the next step for all companies to do but i have never ridden one so maybe i dont know the down falls of that. if there is any. just wondering
orlandoi don’t get it how can you stand to ride with the elementary stem its such a piece of shit, i have one on my bike creeks alll the time like its about to snap bars move daily i mean really wtf was odyssey thinging
charles blood*thinking*
charles blooddoesn’t the funday have a 13.25 rear end?
charles bloodHey Charles, Sorry you are having problems with the Elementary, it’s been out a long time now and has proved itself pretty well, but some people do struggle with it. Drop me an email (georgef at odysseybmx.com) and I will be happy to try to talk you through it and replace it under warranty if necessary.
GeorgeGeorge
It has 13.5 at 30-10, 27-9. It has 13.25 slammed. I run mine at that with 30-11. Its a beast of a frame.
The Real Dan.is here today
c d cOk, on the Funday it is possible to run a 13.25 rear end length, but your chain will be tight. However it does work for a bunch of people without any problems.
Charles. Email George about the stem. I’ve never had any problems and the when people do have one its a result of no grease being used. Hope this helps.
Alex-No the 4 degrees doesn’t change the spin at all. I find it helps more with manuals and it makes the bars feel higher. The 1 degree always made me think the bars were bent and it lowered my hands.
We are leaving triple bolt clamps in the 80’s were they belong!
jimcFunny! I had a three-bolt seat post clamp in the 90s because my seat used to move a lot. If we were still using chromoly seatposts, we would still need excessive seat post clamps. And built-ins would not work well.
It’s amazing how using better metal and metal processing, better plastic materials, and new steering and headset designs changed things so that simple designs that failed in the 80s and 90s (thin tubing, single bolt st.pst., plastic pedals, etc, spider web-like sprockets) work so well now. My friend and I used to bend or break just about every part–even stems used to break in two and seats would end up looking like a slab of melted cheese hanging on the seatpost. When you’re getting stylish and your sprocket folds and ends up digging into the your leg like Jaws, you learn.
I was determined to never buy another Taiwan-built frame after buying some over-hyped, crooked junk back in the day. (I was shocked to notice that the thing arrived at my house, basically straight off of the boat, without even being opened and inspected by that bike company. It was visually crooked and rode funny. I was pissed!)
These days I have two S&Ms and a euro Standard STA, which I love but needed something else. I liked the Sundays and their design and manufacturing details, but it wasn’t until I read a post from Jim C. that he spent the day inspecting the frames when they arrived that I knew I would trust a Sunday. So I recently got a Second Wave. Its good stuff!
Well, hard plastic seats are back. How long before a “cool, new” wedge stem is back?
L. S.what yall need to do is make a frame with the wave top and bottom tube, and a T1 style seatstay wishbone to match the ball style chainstay. hmmm, a sunday/terrible one collab? i would jizz…
waltoriousHey Jim, any idea when the JCPC pedals are going to be available?
Mike30:11 would sit at 13.375″, not 13.25″.
vbi have an ian and i ride a 28/10 garing with a shadow interlock chain. i have it slammed all the way, but the back end is way too long with one extra link. if it is that big of a deal for some people, it is well worth having a ridiculously tight chin.
johnit must be nice when you get bored of a 24″ to just build a 20″ up hmm i wish
nicoYeah it’s definitely cool, but I do that so I can test the stuff out there. I have to know what I’m talking about. Well atleast know as much as I can because you can’t know it all.
jimcya for me when you trade you 950$ bike for a mtb thers no going back : /
nicoawesome bikes man
jacob rainbirdHow’s that lower bb/shorter CS working out for you?
I thinking of trying out the same change as i am also more use to a longer rear end, I’ve have considered trying the change you have made.
Deandoes someone know how tall is aaron rose , pleaseee??
ningnoHey Jim! Now that you have had more time on the Funday, how does it compare to the Second Wave? I just bought the Second Wave a week ago and I love it to death, and wouldn’t trade it for a Funday, but I’d just like to know anyways. Also, any new on the JCPC?
DAKDAK
Honestly there is no difference. I have 2 fundays and my buddy has an ian and they all feel the same. The only difference is on the funday if you come down more ass heavy it’s less forgiving and will loop out a bit quicker.
ryanhey im in for a new sunday but im not sure funday or 2nd wave for street and some park anyone riden both and could help me out a little?
