[...] I suppose if i were to choose my favorite game it would be riding my bike; more specifically my bmx bike. It may not seem much like a game and if someone were to ask me the same question 6 years ago i would not have the same answer. BUT… to me it is a game, at least by these definitions. I figure that riding my bike is a game of ilinx. Not necessarily focused on being dizzy (which came later) but definitely focused on a sense of disorientation. Most people around me seem to possess a few striking memories of riding as a child. What seemed to resonate in all of them was the joy of speed, and for a lucky few, the gut flexing pleasure of being weightless. My memories were no different. It was when i would launch out of a 12″ dirt lip at the park and catch what i thought was enough air to merit a pilot’s license. Although these would seem enough to hook me, it wasn’t. I went years without riding a bike. It was towards the end of high school that I ended up with another bike. I was hooked. Maybe the time had equipped me with the tools to truly appreciate it for what it was an what it did. Now, all i know is i cannot stop riding, and will not until my knees explode. the past years have been great. The more i ride, the more i progress. The more i progress, the more i feel. Its hard to explain the sensation of manualing (balancing on one wheel without pedaling) down a busy street at full speed with no brakes or launching off of a banked curb over obstacles littering the street. There is a sort of order and chaos. When I do a trick, I can prepare for it mentally, but the moment my front wheel lifts off of the ground im taking a chance. I suppose this is an alea quality. Now this isnt to say its reckless because it does take a certain amount practice and technique but its the pleasure out of pushing myself to the limits. Its when i push myself that i feel as if I’m teetering on that thin line. its there that i find out what I’m capable of and i feel like i did as a child. Every time I ride i become a little more comfortable with what my capabilities and decide to take it a little further. Its hard to put into words the sensation of riding like this but i did find a video which seems to convey how i feel short of doing it and i hope you watch. http://www.sundaybikes.com/v3/video-archive/?v=3768 [...]
